Becoming Moss - A Meditation
Becoming Moss - A Meditation
Stretch your imagination to become
the moss in the small spaces of the world,
never begging for attention
Send your consciousness outward to embody
the moss in the wintered spaces of the city,
ever green amongst the grey
Pause and see the growth that watches you pass by
Look closely into the non human universe
and find that there are many ways to be alive
_______________
What would it take for you to imagine yourself as this moss, in the thin space between a metal plate and the sidewalk just north of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn New York? The air cold, and the sun bright just before noon on a Thursday. What would it take to feel the potential thoughts and experiences of this plant that knows the world in different ways? Take a minute and be still. Try to imagine your life as a bit of moss. And then as the next step, go outside and find some small green, in some small space where you live. Get down on your hands and knees and look closely. Try to see everything. Put your nose close and smell it. Disregard the strange looks, you are doing the important work of empathizing with the world. With all you can, try to love this moss. Say thank you, and carry with you a new life outside your own.
